About the book

The seat opens before you feel entitled to sit in it.

Most leadership advice follows a comforting sequence: first you prepare, then you feel confident, then you step forward and lead. It sounds right. It is also a lie.

In a real career, the sequence never runs that way. The assignment arrives before you feel qualified. The decision lands before the data is complete. And while you wait to feel ready, someone less prepared but more willing to begin walks in ahead of you.

Stop Applying for Bronze is a field guide for women building careers in technology, business, and leadership who keep waiting to feel qualified before they claim their place.

Confidence is not the prerequisite. It is the reward for having led.

The story behind the title

An excerpt from the introduction.

“I applied for bronze. I won gold.”

The lesson was not about awards. It was about how often capable women aim below their ability, negotiating themselves down before anyone else gets the chance.

The ceiling was never the opportunity. It was the level I allowed myself to ask for.

Inside the book

Eight frameworks for decisions that do not wait.

Practical tools you can use on Monday morning, not theory for someday.

  1. 01

    Enough information

Know when you have enough information to decide instead of waiting for certainty.

  2. 02

    Crisis or noise

Tell a real crisis from noise when everything feels urgent at once.

  3. 03

    Fact or fear

Recognize when “I’m not ready” is a fact you can fix — and when it is just fear.

  4. 04

    Failing forward

Learn from a failed decision without turning it into self-punishment.

  5. 05

    Leading experts

Lead experts whose work you do not fully understand without losing authority.

  6. 06

    Owning the call

Own the decisions that are yours to own, even when you delegate the work.

  7. 07

    Beyond the room

Build teams and systems that do not depend on you being in the room.

  8. 08

    Asking for gold

Stop aiming below your ability and start asking for what you have earned.

The big idea

We have the sequence backward.

We are taught that confidence comes first and leadership follows. It is backward. Confidence is built from evidence, and evidence only comes from having acted.

The most capable women are often the ones most caught in this trap: more prepared than the people who pass them by, held back by a private conviction that they need to feel a little more ready first.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

About the book, who it's for, and what you'll take away.

Who is Stop Applying for Bronze for?

This book is for women whose responsibilities have grown faster than their confidence: executives, founders, directors, managers, and professionals stepping into greater authority. Whether you already lead an organization or are preparing to lead your first team, it offers a practical approach to making decisions and taking responsibility before you feel fully ready.

Do I need to work in technology or hold a C-suite role?

No. Adriana’s experience comes from technology, business operations, and executive leadership, but the book’s tools apply beyond those settings. You do not need a technical background or an executive title. The common thread is responsibility: making a difficult decision, leading others, or considering an opportunity that feels larger than your current comfort zone.

How is this different from a motivational or confidence book?

The focus is not on convincing you to feel fearless. It is on helping you decide what to do while uncertainty is still present. The book examines evidence, authority, accountability, and the conditions that make a decision responsible. It also recognizes that unfair systems and inadequate support are real obstacles, not simply confidence problems women must solve within themselves.

Does the book include practical tools and exercises?

Yes. Each chapter includes a practical framework, worked examples, and an action to apply to your own situation. Tools include the Fact-or-Fear Test, The Signature Test, and The Dependency Audit. The book also includes a thirty-day application plan and a quick-reference section, so you can return to the relevant tool when a real decision arises.

What does “Stop Applying for Bronze” mean?

The title grew out of Adriana’s experience of expecting bronze and receiving a Gold Stevie® Award. “Applying for bronze” describes the limits we sometimes place on our own expectations before anyone else evaluates our work. It is not about dismissing smaller achievements or always pursuing more. It is about making sure your ambitions reflect your evidence and priorities, not an automatic decision to underestimate yourself.

Can I use the book with my team or a leadership group?

The chapter questions and exercises can serve as starting points for a team discussion, professional book club, or women’s leadership group. Participants can bring a real decision, apply a relevant framework, and compare their reasoning. The aim is to make responsibilities, evidence, and next steps clearer, not simply to discuss whether everyone feels more confident.
